Write a review of the book” Perks of Being a Wallflower”

As you may know, when we buy books, for example, on Amazon,  you often find that people have reviewed the book in different ways. Your job is to write a book review of the novel we just read. In the review I want you to take a perspective as the writer. That is, you may be a critic of adolescent literature. How does the book hold up that way? Maybe you are someone who writes about LGBT issues, how might you write a review of it in that way? Maybe you are a psychologist, how might you review this book? Maybe you are a UPRM college student who was required to read this book, how might you review it? You may pick another perspective if you choose as well. Just let us know who you are when writing it. I expect you to write 300 words for this blog entry.

You can check on Amazon for book reviews of other novels to understand how the genre is written.

Writing from a different Perspective

Write about Charlie from a Different Perspective

For this assignment you will become one of the characters from The Perks of Being a Wallflower that are listed below. You will write from the perspective of that character. That is: you will become that character for writing this assignment. You may use the same format as Charlie did. Write a letter to someone that knows Charlie but is not in the story.  In your letter/s explain a part of Charlie, the way you see him, a way that maybe Charlie dos not see exactly in himself. Write openly and use examples from the story to show your points. You may use any of the experiences of these characters that let us know what relationship they have with Charlie. You may show remorse, guilt, love, or you may try to explain why certain things happened the way they did between you and Charlie.

Here are the characters: Charlie’s dad or mom, Charlie’s brother or sister, Patrick, Sam, Bill, Brad, Mary Elizabeth

Paraphrase your Poem

Take the poem you found for your presentation and write a paraphrase for it. When you paraphrase a piece of writing you use your own words, or different words, to show the same idea. It is not a summary, but a carefully told sense of what the poem is about, going through it to not lose any important information.

If you did a song, I ask that you take time to find a famous, or not so famous, poem and write about it.

After you have your paraphrase, look on poets.org to see if your poem fits within a particular school or movement of poetry.

Make sure you have written 300 words! Enjoy!

Harrison Bergeron

This wonderful little science fiction story says a lot about who we are and are capable of becoming. Read the information on science fiction and then write a blog entry where you take some part of the story that impressed you and write about it, relating it to the ideas put forth in the explanation of what science fiction is.

Sonny’s Blues

Please write an entry where you take the topic that you looked up and presented to class and show how it is related to the story. Please do not be general with your answer. Look deeply into the story and write about your interpretation of the influence you think is there and why.  300 words! At the same time you can give some thoughts on the story.

Write about one of the topics in the LRRH stories you read

The idea here is to write a short journal entry of 250 words or more where you pick some aspect of the LRRH stories, set up an assertion (thesis) and use examples from the story to support your idea. This is a practice for the real thing that will come soon!

If you read “How to Write about a Story” on Moodle it will help you considerably.

Rose for Emily

You are an investigative reporter who has been working on the Emily Grierson case. Now it is time for you to publish an article for the newspaper where you tell readers what happened. You may decide what newspaper you want to publish in. For example, if you choose a paper like the New York Times, you will need to be quite intellectual in your approach. If you choose a paper like “El Vocero” you can be much more hard core in the telling. The idea is  to present the info as if it were a real newspaper article. Remember number of word minimum and good English.
